A Volunteer
Story:
"Recently I was ordered by
the court to do community service as restitution for D.U.I. By
chance or perhaps divine providence, I contacted Backstreet
Missions, Inc. and they graciously accepted my offer of
service. At first I thought of this service as a form of
punishment and because of physical disabilities I had to
really push myself to perform the work that was required. But
then as I became more involved something wonderful happened!
While working alongside the staff and volunteers, I started to
notice how dedicated they were in giving their personal time
and effort to provide food for the less fortunate in our
society. More importantly, I started to understand that they
were also concerned about the emotional and spiritual needs of
these same people.
Bloomington is a better place
to live because of the Mission. With so many negative things
going on in the world today, it has warmed my heart to know
there are still some people who are trying to make a positive
difference. I no longer think of community service as
punishment but rather as an opportunity. For through this
process, God has truly blessed me by turning a lemon into
lemonade.
I am grateful for all those
at the Mission because they are living examples of one of the
teachings of Jesus in that it is more blessed to give than
receive. I think this is because that while in the process of
giving to others, we open ourselves to receive one of God's
true blessings that of peace and fulfillment that comes from
knowing that we are obeying His command - to love thy
neighbor. If you are looking for a place to serve your
community, I would point you toward the Mission."
Danny
Danny has completed his
community service time and now volunteers on a regular basis
at Geno's Cafeteria. He is busy in the community and is
volunteering at other places as well. We appreciate Danny and
his enthusiastic attitude.
